Summary

A century before A GAME OF THRONES, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros…

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R。R。 Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE。

Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne there was Dunk and Egg。

A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals – in stature if not experience。 Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg – whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king。 Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lie ahead for Dunk and Egg; as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits。

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS brings together for the first time the first three official prequel novellas to George R。R。 Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory。

Featuring more than 160 illustrations by Gary Gianni, one of the finest fantasy artists of our time, this beautiful volume will transport readers to the world of the Seven Kingdoms in an age of bygone chivalry。

Really fun book, a nice addition to the Game of Thrones world

amazing book, im super excited to continue reading the rest of George’s book。the beginning of all 3 stories are hard to get into, personally, but once you do, you’ll end up loving everything。we here, too, see a pattern of expectations going to hell, and all of your theories ending up not true but thats what i loved。

I feel like I’ll love this with a second read through

La amistad de Duncan y Egg es de lo mejor que encontraras en este libro。 Las aventuras y desventuras de estos dos personajes te harán reír y llorar, sin mencionar las acontecimientos que tendrán importancia en Canción de Hielo y Fuego

Season 8 soured me from this universe but the hupe for House of Dragons have pulled me back in。 Re-reading this has made me remember how amazing Martin's world and writing is。 Easily one of the best series。 Dunk and Egg tales is a bit shorter, more light version of the main series but it's easily as good。 I only wish we had more。 I guess that's for the main series too。 Season 8 soured me from this universe but the hupe for House of Dragons have pulled me back in。 Re-reading this has made me remember how amazing Martin's world and writing is。 Easily one of the best series。 Dunk and Egg tales is a bit shorter, more light version of the main series but it's easily as good。 I only wish we had more。 I guess that's for the main series too。 。。。more

Classic ASOIAF, once you start the story pulls you in and you can't put it down!1st story: So much great foreshadowing in so little time。 Mystery is there, and what I love most about Martin: he makes you wonder, he makes you be a detective, it seems complicated - and yet it's all so perfectly well matching in the end!!! A colorful and world-expanding addition to the world of Westeros that was a refreshing read as we wait for (it's been a decade I think) for the Winds of Winter。 Duncan and Egg bring all of the action and political intrigue George R。R。 Martin is best at。 The illustrations in the book were especially beautiful and added much to the book!

The character pair go very well together and the story is entertaining and a good mix of relaxed world building and combat。

If I could I would give this piece a four and a half stars。 Take a classic medieval novel, with duels, trips do kingdoms, medieval jousts, noble intrigues, and add the excellent described mistic of Game of Thrones, all in one book。 This book, which its not as big as I wanted it to be, explores more of the Seven Kindgoms, its people, the poor, the rich, and give voice to real problems than the Game of Thrones could。 Excellent work!

Just wonderful。 Dunk and Egg rank among my favorite duos ever; my only complaint is that I wish there was more of this story。

Dunk and Egg might just be the Batman and Robin of Westeros。 The Hedge Knight feels like GRRM’s Hobbit while The Sworn Sword ends up being a Rashmon-style tale exploring the aftermath of a divisive rebellion (one that would surely make for a great season of House of Dragon)。 The Mystery Knight caps off this little trilogy with a rousing tourney complete with politics and back-room plotting, which allows Dunk to shine as GRRM’s most noble and moral character (sorry Ned)。 All three fable-esque adv Dunk and Egg might just be the Batman and Robin of Westeros。 The Hedge Knight feels like GRRM’s Hobbit while The Sworn Sword ends up being a Rashmon-style tale exploring the aftermath of a divisive rebellion (one that would surely make for a great season of House of Dragon)。 The Mystery Knight caps off this little trilogy with a rousing tourney complete with politics and back-room plotting, which allows Dunk to shine as GRRM’s most noble and moral character (sorry Ned)。 All three fable-esque adventures are gripping page-turners, spurred on by the most likeable knight in fantasy literature and his wise-cracking, bald-headed sidekick (and future king)。 。。。more

Good set of short stories from the land of Westeros。 Martin is a talented writer and his knack for political intrigue ensures that things never get dull。 The illustrations were a fun addition as well。

This book is a collection of 3 novellas following the adventures of Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) & his squire Egg: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword & The Mystery Knight, these stories are set approximately 100 years before the main events of A Song of Ice & Fire。 Dunk & Egg are an odd match but I loved their dynamic。Reading these novellas has made me want to reread ASOIAF so much。 Martin excels at giving characters a legacy, for example, the first novella “The Hedge Knight” begins with Dunk buryi This book is a collection of 3 novellas following the adventures of Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) & his squire Egg: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword & The Mystery Knight, these stories are set approximately 100 years before the main events of A Song of Ice & Fire。 Dunk & Egg are an odd match but I loved their dynamic。Reading these novellas has made me want to reread ASOIAF so much。 Martin excels at giving characters a legacy, for example, the first novella “The Hedge Knight” begins with Dunk burying his master/mentor Ser Arlan of Pennytree & even though we never see Arlan alive, you feel like you know who he was because of what Dunk & the other characters remember about him。 Not only this, but Martin knows the value of creating a world with deep lore filled with stories & legends。 My only teeny tiny complaint is that there are so many characters mentioned & at times it was hard for me to remember them all。If you haven’t read the main series I’d say this collection of novellas is quite a good place to start。 It’s fairly short, you’ll get an idea of what George R。 R。 Martin’s writing style is like, his characterisations & also a brief intro to the world of ASOIAF & Westeros。 。。。more

This prequel to Game of Thrones was fun and interesting, if a little difficult to listen to in the car。 Since I remember most of the family names and history, I could keep track。

These 3 novellas might be my favorite thing GRRM has ever written。 It’s bittersweet finishing it cause I really don’t think we will get any more of them。 George your work really touches me

This was a blast。 It’s been so long since I read any of ASOIAF that I forgot what a great writer GRRM was。 The stories were awesome, Dunk is everything a good knight should be, and Egg is a perfect foil for him。 I loved all the tidbits of the world that are strewn into these three short stories, but all three had great plots and twists and turns as well。 A must-read for any fan of the series。 The illustrations were great too。 Very enjoyable。

Fred

Very well told tales。 Hoping for more!

At 17 years old, almost 7-foot-tall, strong and with weight and reach in his favour, Dunk is a formidable Hedge Knight。 Essentially, he is a Knight who travels throughout the 7 Kingdoms doing jobs he deems true and honourable for coin。

This book is full of half a heartbeats and clouts to the ears。 Every time I saw some of Georges repeated writing I would literally roll my eyes。 Other than that the book was ok。 If you need more Game of Throne before Winds of Winter and are interested in some old history the book is… alright。

Logan Russell

I really enjoyed this story。 Oh, Dunk。 Thick as a castle wall, indeed。 A well-meaning dumby, if there ever was one。 Moral and strong, but not much more eloquent than "a good clout on the ear。" And little Egg the smartass。 There's a combo。That Targeryn "thinks he's a dragon in human form。。 Pity he wasn't born a Fossoway; he'd think he was an apple, and we'd all be a deal safer。" 😂Far more manageable: both in length (commitment) and shear number of characters to keep track of。 Still has those trad I really enjoyed this story。 Oh, Dunk。 Thick as a castle wall, indeed。 A well-meaning dumby, if there ever was one。 Moral and strong, but not much more eloquent than "a good clout on the ear。" And little Egg the smartass。 There's a combo。That Targeryn "thinks he's a dragon in human form。。 Pity he wasn't born a Fossoway; he'd think he was an apple, and we'd all be a deal safer。" 😂Far more manageable: both in length (commitment) and shear number of characters to keep track of。 Still has those trademark "no one is safe" kind of twists。Connections to ASOIAF, but no really need to know any of that。 You'll hear some familiar house names, which is fun, but it's a century before that story。 A fully self-contained story。 Though, I wouldn't be disappointed to hear more about these characters。Take me back to Westeros。 If all G。R。R。Martin's books were as easy to read as this one, I would've finished them all by now - multiple times (instead I've only finished two at the time of this writing)。 。。。more

I had a fun time reading these three novellas set a hundred years before the Game of Thrones timeline。 I grew attached to Dunk the hedge knight and his squire Egg, and their interactions were wholesome and endearing。 The second novella was the strongest in my opinion, while the other two took a bit longer to get properly started。 I will probably read other books set in Westeros that are not the Game of Thrones series。
